Driveway Paving Starts With the Base

Asphalt is the top layer, and the base rock under it spreads each car's weight over the soil. NRCS soil maps show mostly silty clay loam around Dixon, with expansive clay in places. Clay ground loses strength when wet, so we grade and compact the ground first. Then the base rock goes down in layers no thicker than 6 inches, and each one is rolled tight.

Hot mix asphalt is spread hot and rolled before it cools. The City of Dixon's construction specifications call for final rolling while the mix is above 150 degrees F. Thickness follows the use, and a drive for an RV or a loaded truck gets a thicker section.

Water that sits on asphalt or soaks into the base breaks it down. We shape the grade so rain runs off the drive and away from the house. Within 10 feet of a house, the California Residential Code calls for paving to slope at least 2 percent away. That is about a quarter inch of drop per foot.

Should You Replace or Resurface Your Asphalt Driveway?

Asphalt resurfacing puts a new layer of hot mix over the old drive. It works when the base under the drive is still sound. A worn surface with many fine cracks can often take an overlay. A sound drive that has only faded to gray may need just asphalt sealcoating.

Some damage runs deeper. Alligator cracking across wide areas points to a failed base, and so do sunken ruts. Potholes that keep coming back are another sign. An overlay on a failed base tends to crack again in the same places.

Replacement starts with tearing out the old asphalt and hauling it off. Then the base is rebuilt where it failed and compacted again before new hot mix goes down. It is also a good time to widen the drive or fix the slope at the garage.

Long Rural and Sloped Driveways Around Dixon

Farm and orchard driveways in Solano and Yolo counties can be long. A long drive gets a slight crown or cross slope so rain runs off the sides. At a Solano County road, a culvert under the drive must be at least 15 inches across. A road that several homes share falls under private road paving.

Many rural drives start as gravel. A sound gravel drive can often become part of the base for asphalt. Thin spots get fresh base rock, and soft spots get dug out and rebuilt. Then the whole drive is regraded and rolled tight before the hot mix goes on.

On a sloped driveway, rain runs fast down the pavement. We shape the drive so water leaves at the edges or drops into a drain before the garage. A long drive to a new home may also face fire access rules on grade. Check with the local fire district before the base goes in.

FAQ

Asphalt Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about asphalt driveways around Dixon and the towns of Solano, Yolo and Sacramento counties. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (707) 396-7730

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
An asphalt trade association lists 3 inches of asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of compacted base as one option. At a Solano County road, the county's minimum is 2 inches of asphalt over 6 inches of base. Heavier vehicles and soft ground call for more. We set the section for your drive, and the written quote spells it out.
How much does asphalt driveway paving cost?
The price starts with the size of the drive and the ground under it. Tear-out and haul-off of old asphalt add to it, as do extra thickness and a steep slope. We look at the drive and its access before we price it, and the quote comes to you in writing. When you compare quotes, check that each one lists the base depth and the compacted asphalt thickness.
Do I need a permit to pave a driveway in Dixon?
Dixon's Building Division lists driveways at ground level as work exempt from a building permit. Driveway work at the street, in the public right-of-way, needs an encroachment permit from the city's Engineering Department. A drive onto a county road needs the county's encroachment permit. One onto a state highway, like Highway 113, needs a Caltrans permit.
Can you widen my driveway or add a parking pad?
Yes. Wider drives and added parking pads are part of Asphalt Driveway Paving. The new section gets its own compacted base, and the old edge is cut back to solid pavement. If the old drive is failing, replacing it at the same time often makes more sense.
Does someone need to call 811 before a driveway is dug out?
California law has whoever digs call 811 at least two working days before digging starts. Grading for a new driveway counts. Utility-owned lines get marked, but private lines like sprinkler pipes or power to a shed do not. Show us where yours run before the work starts.
When is the best time to pave a driveway around Dixon?
The long dry season is paving season. About 84 percent of the year's rain at nearby Davis falls from November through March, per NOAA normals. Hot mix needs firm, dry ground under it, and clay soil can stay wet for days after a storm. Winter jobs wait for the ground to dry out.

Asphalt and concrete under one company

The grading, the base, the asphalt or concrete and any retaining wall all come from us. One call covers the whole job.

Built from the base up

Every surface we build starts on a graded and compacted base. That base matters here: some lots around Dixon sit on clay that cracks when dry and swells when wet. The grade is shaped so water sheds off, and thickness follows the load.
