How Much Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost in Northern California?
National cost guides put a new asphalt driveway at about $5 to $13 per square foot, installed. Tearing out an old driveway and repaving runs about $8 to $15 per square foot. For a two-car driveway of 600 to 800 square feet, the same guides land between about $3,000 and $12,000.
These are market numbers, not our price list. The sections below show what moves the number on asphalt driveway paving for a Sacramento Valley home. Most of it comes down to the ground under the driveway and the work around it.
What does an asphalt driveway cost per square foot?
National cost guides price driveway work by the square foot, with labor and materials together. These are the ranges their 2026 updates list for the common jobs.
| Job | Published market range |
|---|---|
| New asphalt driveway, installed | $5 to $13 per square foot |
| One-car driveway, about 400 square feet | $2,000 to $6,000 total |
| Two-car driveway, 600 to 800 square feet | $3,000 to $12,000 total |
| Tear out the old driveway and repave | $8 to $15 per square foot |
| Removal and haul-off of old asphalt | $1 to $2 per square foot |
| Grading and leveling, where the site needs it | $5 to $10 per square foot |
| Overlay (resurfacing) on a sound base | $3 to $7 per square foot |
| Crack filling | $1 to $4 per linear foot |
Labor is about half the bill, one guide says, at $5 to $7 per square foot. Another guide notes that some contractors set a minimum charge of $2,000 or more. That minimum is why a small pad can cost more per square foot than a full driveway.
What drives the price of an asphalt driveway in the valley?
These are the things that move the number on a valley driveway. One national guide names size and local labor rates as the biggest cost factors.
- Size. Square footage sets most of the bill. Every added foot of width or length adds asphalt and base under it.
- Base and soil. The base is crushed aggregate, laid in compacted lifts under the asphalt. One guide says clay soils often need extra excavation and more base to prevent cracking and settling. In Sacramento, USDA soil data puts a clay subsoil that swells when wet under about a third of the city.
- Removal and haul-off. Taking out old asphalt adds about $1 to $2 per square foot in national guides. The cost climbs when the old material is hard to remove.
- Access. Hot mix arrives by dump truck and goes down through a paving machine. A narrow side yard or a tight gate means more hand work.
- Thickness. One guide says most home driveways need 2 to 3 inches of asphalt. Heavy vehicles call for 4 inches or more. Another guide suggests a thicker layer where hot summers soften asphalt. RVs and farm trucks belong in the heavy group.
- Slope and shape. One guide calls straight, flat driveways the most economical to pave. Slopes and curves can add 15 to 30 percent.
- Drainage. Water has to shed off the surface and away from the garage. Low spots that hold winter water need grading before the asphalt goes down.
What adds cost on a long rural driveway?
Length is the big one. A 12-foot-wide farm drive that runs 300 feet is 3,600 square feet, about five two-car driveways. Our page on paving long private roads and farm drives covers how those get built.
Where a drive meets a county road, the county’s encroachment permit sets the connection. For an asphalt connection, Solano County’s conditions call for 2 inches of asphalt over 6 inches of aggregate base. A culvert under that connection must be at least 15 inches across. A drive onto a state highway needs a Caltrans encroachment permit instead.
Fire rules can add width and turnouts on drives to new homes. A Solano County handout covers the Vacaville Fire Protection District area. It calls for 20 feet of unobstructed width, or 12 feet with approval. Driveways over 150 feet also need a turnout.
Your local fire district answers what applies to your lot. Ask before the base goes in, because width and turnouts change the square footage.
Does resurfacing cost less than replacing a driveway?
It does when the base is sound. National guides price an overlay at $3 to $7 per square foot. A tear-out and repave runs $8 to $15.
An overlay is a new layer of hot mix over the old surface. Failed spots get cut out and patched first. Edges at the garage and the street may be milled so the new layer meets them flush.
One guide says an overlay is not suitable for driveways with major cracks or structural problems. Another calls out holes and spiderweb cracks. Our page on resurfacing an asphalt driveway covers when an overlay makes sense.
What does upkeep add after the driveway is paved?
National guides say a new asphalt driveway gets its first seal about six months after paving. After that, they list sealing every two to five years. Crack filling runs $1 to $4 per linear foot in one guide.
Upkeep belongs in the math. One guide puts an asphalt driveway’s life at 15 to 30 years with good installation and care. Our asphalt sealcoating page covers the prep and the timing around valley heat and winter rain.
How do you compare two driveway quotes?
Line up the quotes by what each one includes. Two quotes for the same driveway can cover different work.
- Base depth, and whether the base rock is compacted in lifts.
- Asphalt thickness after rolling, in inches.
- Removal and haul-off of the old driveway.
- Grading, so water sheds off and away from the house.
A thinner base or thinner asphalt can lower the price. One guide notes that thicker asphalt costs more but lasts longer.
Why is the quote written after someone sees the driveway?
A lot of what sets the price sits below the surface. A photo can show cracks, but it cannot show a soft base or wet clay under the old asphalt. Square footage and the slope at the street change the number too.
The street side can add costs of its own. Dixon and Solano County both list ground-level driveways as exempt from a building permit. Work in the public right-of-way is a separate matter.
In Dixon, driveway work in the public right-of-way needs an encroachment permit from the city’s Engineering Department. Sacramento requires a driveway permit for a new or widened driveway. Those permits carry their own fees.
All of this is why we look at the driveway first. The quote comes after that, in writing.
